Johnny Depp Accused of Pup Smuggling Dogs Get Death Sentence

So Johnny Depp flies into Australia on a private jet with his two Yorkshire terriers Boo and Pistol in tow. But Mr Depp didn't apply for permits for the dogs so he's breaking our quarantine laws. Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says Depp has two options: fly the dogs home to California or have them euthanised. Why all the fuss? Because the dogs could have diseases that we don't have here such as rabies, ehrlichia and leishmania. But biosecurity laws don't just protect our pets from diseases, they also attempt to stop invasive species arriving on our shores. Australia's had to learn the hard way about biosecurity breaches. Here's five recent disasters.



This Brazilian fish is often found in aquariums, but once released into local waterways it competes with native fish. It's thought the first pearl cichlids were dumped into a lake near Perth by someone in 2006. Since then it's escaped into the iconic Swan-Canning river system. It's also been found in the Tweed River in NSW. Goldfish and Koi are other aquarium fish causing havoc.
