When a take on Run the World (Girls) kicks off a key musical number in Pitch Perfect 2, the Beyonce female-empowerment jam plays as a mission statement of the film.



Both behind and in front of the camera, women call the shots in the entertaining and superior sequel to the 2012 musical-comedy hit.



Pitch Perfect 2 continues the bawdy misadventures of the Barden Bellas, an all-girl college a cappella group. The script by Kay Cannon is even lighter on narrative than its predecessor but fills any resulting void with riotous gags.



The directorial debut of actress and producer Elizabeth Banks should sustain the franchise — which could outlive the Glee fever that inspired it.



Although the first film hinged heavily on battle-of-the-sexes friction, the returning male characters have been relegated largely to afterthoughts — beyond a pair of romantic subplots.



A degree of democratization, meanwhile, has taken place within the ranks of the Bellas.
