Schools evacuated as wild weather continues to lash NSW south coast
via IFTTT Evacuation ordered due to 'imminent failure' of Jerrara Dam near Kiama Residents near a dam on the NSW South Coast have been ordered to evacuate their homes due to the "imminent failure" of the waterway. The NSW State Emergency Services has also initiated an evacuation warning for the St Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet areas overnight, as they get ready to door knock homes that will need to be evacuated. The failure of the Jerrara Dam, just west of Kiama, was expected to result in extremely dangerous flooding downstream on Mount Brandon Road, Jerrara Road and Jamberoo Road. The dam is in a rural area and is in the process of being decommissioned. Ten properties were affected by the evacuation order. The residents on eight properties chose to leave immediately, while the occupants of two properties chose to stay, the SES spokeswoman said.
